Here is what is proposed, what is already in place, and what it means for buyers around Chromepet and Nemilicherry.

Chennai AirportPallavaramChromepetTambaramPerungalathurVandalurKilambakkam

GST Road connects areas such as Chennai Airport, Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur, Vandalur and Kilambakkam. In 2026, the corridor continues to benefit from existing transport infrastructure while several proposed and ongoing projects could further improve connectivity.

For property buyers looking around Chromepet and Nemilicherry, these developments are worth watching because connectivity, employment, education and everyday amenities all contribute to the growth of a residential location.

One project in this broader growth area is SMG Velan Nagar, a gated community plot project near Chromepet and Nemilicherry in Chennai, developed by Sri Maha Construction & Promoters.

So, what are the major infrastructure developments to know about in 2026?

Airport–Kilambakkam Metro: A Major Proposed Development

One of the most significant proposed projects for the GST Road corridor is the Airport–Kilambakkam Metro extension.

15.46 kmProposed corridor length

13Elevated stations

ProposedNot yet operational

According to the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) DPR, the corridor is planned to connect Chennai Airport with Kilambakkam, passing through Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur and Vandalur. If implemented, it could provide an additional public transport connection along one of Chennai's busiest southern corridors.

Important: this is a proposed project, not an operational Metro line through Chromepet today.

Better Local Connectivity in Chromepet

Infrastructure development is not only about major Metro projects.

The Radha Nagar railway subway in Chromepet was inaugurated in January 2026. The subway provides connectivity across the railway tracks and includes pedestrian access towards Chromepet railway station.

Projects such as these can make a practical difference to everyday movement within established residential neighbourhoods. For areas around Chromepet and Nemilicherry, local road and railway connectivity can be just as important as large future projects.

Chennai Airport Development

Another major advantage of the GST Road corridor is its proximity to Chennai International Airport.

Airport infrastructure continues to undergo development and modernization, supporting the wider airport-side commercial and transportation ecosystem. Airports Authority of India documents for 2026–27 include multiple development and infrastructure works at Chennai Airport.

For nearby residential areas, an established international airport can support accessibility for:

Business travellers

Employees

Hospitality businesses

Retail and commercial activity

Airport-related services

This makes the airport an important part of the long-term infrastructure story of the GST Road corridor.

Kilambakkam Bus Terminus and Southern Connectivity

The Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT), Kilambakkam has become an important transport hub for South Chennai and travel towards southern Tamil Nadu.

The wider Kilambakkam area is also being planned with improved multimodal connectivity. Government planning documents have included proposals for better integration between the bus terminus and railway infrastructure.

The proposed Airport–Kilambakkam Metro extension could potentially add another major transport option between the airport and this southern transport hub.

Existing Rail, Metro and Road Connectivity

One of the strengths of the Chromepet area is that it does not depend entirely on future infrastructure. The area already has access to:

GST Road

Chromepet Railway Station

Chennai suburban railway connectivity

Chennai Airport Metro connectivity

Local bus services

Nearby road connections to Tambaram and other southern suburbs

CMRL's feeder services also connect the Airport Metro area with locations including Pallavaram, Chromepet and Tambaram East.

This existing connectivity is important when evaluating a residential location because buyers do not have to depend only on proposed future projects.

Education, Employment and Daily Amenities

The Chromepet–Nemilicherry region is also surrounded by an established urban ecosystem.

Educational institutions such as Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) contribute to the area's education ecosystem, while South Chennai's wider employment network includes areas such as Guindy, Taramani, Perungudi and OMR.

The surrounding areas also offer hospitals, schools, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, banks and other everyday facilities. For a plot buyer, this combination can be more meaningful than looking at a single infrastructure announcement.

What Does This Mean for SMG Velan Nagar?

SMG Velan Nagar, located near Chromepet and Nemilicherry, benefits from being part of an established South Chennai residential corridor.
